Born to a father of Jewish-Russian decent and a Bahamian-American mother, Lenny Kravitz began playing music at the age of three when he used the pots and pans in his grandmother's kitchen as drums. Growing up, Kravitz was exposed to a wide range of musical styles including R&B, gospel, classical and blues. He heard a lot of jazz music because of his father's work as a jazz promoter and his friendships with some of the jazz greats including Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald. Kravitz is a multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, bass, keyboards, drums and percussion on many of his own recordings. Through eight studio albums, Kravitz's style has encompassed a vast array of sounds and styles besides rock, such as funk, soul, reggae and folk. His drive and enthusiasm for music has resulted in an estimated 20 million album sales. His two strongest performing albums were 1993's Are You Gonna Go My Way and 1998's 5. From 1998 to 2001, Kravitz won four Grammy awards for best male rock vocal performance and he has collaborated with the likes of Mick Jagger, Madonna, Jay-Z and Stevie Wonder.
