James Morrison
Part blues, part soul yet firmly rooted by his guitar-work, UK-based singer/songwriter James Morrison's vocal qualities can seem both raspy and silky smooth. Born in 1984 in the market town of Rugby, Warwickshire County, the English lad grew up on a staple diet of soul, blues and classic folk. From the moment his uncle taught him a few blues guitar licks at age 13, Morrison was hooked. His immediate discovery of playing and singing as a means of expression urged him to start writing his own songs.
After moving to Porth, a village near the Cornish coast, Morrison earned money by busking on the streets and working odd jobs in between regular gigs. It was at this time a demo recording of his material landed in the hands of Polydor Records, who immediately signed him. Recorded with producer Martin Terefe, Morrison's debut album Undiscovered proved to be an instant commercial success. Released in July 2006, the debut single 'You Give Me Something' reached number five in the UK charts.
Quickly soaring to platinum status in the UK, Undiscovered also spawned the hit singles 'Wonderful World' and 'The Pieces Don't Fit Anymore'. Seemingly rising to stardom overnight, James Morrison has become a singer/songwriter to watch.
